The federal defence minister has weighed in on the incident at the Legion in Tignish as a Sikh man was asked to remove his religious head covering and heckled with racist remarks.
Harjit Sajjan — the first Sikh M-P to serve as defence minister — says he was shocked to learn of the incident.
He says Canada is a country that celebrates freedom of religion and pointed out that Sikhs have a long and proud history of serving in the Canadian Forces.
Stephen Gallant, president of the Tignish legion, has said the branch accepts full responsibility for the incident and promises training will be offered to staff to ensure such an incident is not repeated.
