The Municipal Government Act takes effect Saturday, and the province says it marks a new era for local governments in PEI.
The Maclauchlan Government says it establishes consistent rules and procedures for municipalities while providing them greater authority, flexibility, and discretion.
This new act replaces the former Municipalities Act, Charlottetown Area Municipalities Act, and City of Summerside Act. Key areas of change relate to how elections are held, administrative expectations, areas of municipal jurisdiction, and financial matters.
