Alabama senator-elect Doug Jones says his victory over Republican Roy Moore in Tuesday’s special election is a win for national unity, dignity and respect.
The lawyer and former federal prosecutor told supporters last night he is “overwhelmed” by his upset win over Moore, who faced growing allegations of sexual assault and harassment against minors dating back when he was in his 30s.
Jones’ one-and-a-half-percentage-point victory will narrow the Republican majority in the U-S Senate to 51-49.
However, Moore has refused to concede, telling his supporters “It’s not over,” and raised the possibility of a recount.
U-S President Donald Trump has congratulated Jones on a “hard fought” win, tweeting “The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win.”
