The new Water Act came up for debate in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesady.
The act is aimed at providing water security, and guiding government decisions involving water management.
But Green Party Leader Peter Bevan-Baker is asking why the Act doesn’t explicitly declare water as a human right.
Bevan-Baker says that’s a missed opportunity to ensure access to water for future generation.
There is language and statements in the ACT that address the issue, and department officials say that in examination of similar legislation across the country, the language used was felt sufficient.
PC Opposition MLA Brad Trivers also voiced concerns that language in the ACT isn’t strong enough.
