The Official Opposition Critic for Communities, Land and Environment says the MacLauchlan Liberals need to ensure all residents potentially affected by municipal amalgamation have a chance to be heard.
Progressive Conservative MLA for Rustico-Emerald, Brad Trivers, is making the comments following news the Town of Montague will be holding a plebiscite on plans for the proposed Three Rivers amalgamation with seven local communities and unincorporated areas in Central Kings County.
Trivers says he presumes other communities involved will follow suit but says the province has a role to play to ensure residents in unincorporated areas are heard.
Trivers says the new Municipalities Act gives broad powers to the Minister and he’s calling on Communities, Lands and Environment Minister Robert Mitchell to take the necessary steps to make sure residents in unincorporated areas have equal access to democracy.
He adds representation for unincorporated areas in amalgamation discussions has been an ongoing issue.
