The PEI Government has stepped in and is providing core funding of $150-thousand for the next two years for the PEI Literacy Alliance.
That rescues the group from closure it faced after the federal government had cut core funding to literacy groups several years ago.
Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie says the alliance has been a literacy leader in the province for many years. He says that after the cut in federal funding, the premier asked the Education Department to work with the Department of Workforce and Advance Learning to ensure the programming would continue.
In addition to this new organizational funding of $150,000, the province will continue to provide annual project funding of approximately $63,000 for the Summer Tutoring Program and other initiatives.
