A late goal in the 2nd period by Connor Moynihan stood up as the winner as the Halifax Mooseheads shaded the Charlottetown Islanders 3-2 in thje Q Saturday afternoon at the Eastlink Centre.
Raphael Lavoie and Maxime Fortier gave the Mooseheads a 2-0 lead in the 1st. Saku Vesterinen and Taylor Egan tied the scored in the 2nd.
The Islanders are 0-2 to start the new season but have only been outscored 6-3.
The Islanders visit Saint John on Thursday night.
Cape Breton skated past the defending Q champion Saint John Sea Dogs, 3-1.

The Summerside Western Capitals are 0-3 to start the MHL season with five straight road games before their home opener this Saturday. The Caps lost 8-0 to the South Shore Lumberjacks in Bridgewater. MacKenzie Janes made 37 saves for the shutout. Grant Cody and Nicholas Tardiff had two goals each.
The Caps are at St. Stephen on Friday night and have their home opener facing Woodstock Saturday night.

The Saint Mary’s Huskies downed the UPEI Panthers, 7-2 in Bridgewater in AUS men’s exhibition hockey. Former Summerside Western Cap Thomas Stavert had a goal and assist for the Huskies while former Islander Jake Coughler scored once.
The Panthers are 0-3 in the pre-season and visit Moncton on Thursday.
In AUS pre-season women’s hockey Moncton got by the Panthers, 2-1. Emma Martin scored for UPEI. Janelle Graham got the winner for Moncton in the 2nd.
St. Thomas plays UPEI in O’Leary today at 4.00 as part of Kraft Hockeyville.

NHL pre-season included Toronto getting by Buffalo, 3-1. Ottawa over Montreal, 5-1. New Jersey edged the NY Rangers, 2-1. Detroit stopped Boston, 5-1. The L.A. Kings went to a shootout to edge Vancouver, 4-3. Edmonton over Winnipeg, 6-2.

Greg Bird hit a three-run homer as the NY Yankees came back to beat Toronto, 4-1 in baseball. Todd Frazier also homered. Joe Biagini (3-12) took the loss.
The Boston Red Sox blanked Cincinnati, 5-0. Eduardo Rodriguez allowed just 3 hits pitching into the 8th inning. Boston’s magic number is down to 3.
Reds rookie Luke Farrell an inning of relief and became the first pitcher in history to face a team managed by his father. John Farrell is the skipper of the Red Sox.

The Kings County Baseball finals continue in Morell today at 4.00 at the Church Field. The Peakes Bombers lead the Stratford A’s, 2-0. A moment of silence will be held before the game to honour the memory of Morell baseball & hockey builder Trixie Dunn who passed away on Thursday.
