Charlottetown City Councillor Eddie Rice is taking a medical leave of absence.
The Ward 1 councillor says he has been struggling with personal and family issues.
Rice issued a statement on Friday.
His leave of absence comes a week after Holland College says the councillor was involved in an altercation with a school staff member.
That prompted a stay-away order where Rice will not be allowed on the Prince of Wales campus on Grafton Street.
A petition is circulating with over 200 names already signed asking asking council to remove Rice from his position.
Deputy Mayor Mike Duffy says the City is aware of the petition and the allegations against the councillor but there is no legislation that will allow council to dismiss a councillor unless they are found guilty of an indictable offense.
Duffy says the issue is under review in relation to the City’s code of conduct.
