The 58th running of the Sobey’s Gold Cup and Saucer on a wet and windy night at Red Shores in Charlottetown and an upset winner as 10-1long shot Shadow Place came on strong at the end.
Always At My Place, the favourite, was second. Arque Hanover finished third.
Gilles Barrieau wins his fourth Gold Cup. He also won with Comedy Hour in 1997, Canaco Simon in 2000 and London Mews N in 2002.
Owner Kyle Fellows from Rockwood, Ontario was pleased and surprised to win.
Shadow Play also co-owned by Carl Stafford of Conception Bay South, Newfoundland-Labrador.
The 6 year old gelding is an offspring of Arts Place.
