Canadian consumers seem to have unknowingly sampled genetically modified salmon.
U.S.-based AquaBounty Technologies reported in a fiscal update that four-point-five tonnes of its salmon fillets were sold in Canada between April and June.
The company, which has a production plant on P-E-I, got federal approval to sell salmon containing genetic material from ocean pout and Chinook salmon last year.
Health Canada doesn’t require labelling on genetically modified food because the items have been assessed for safety and nutritional standards
