A new program announced by Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau, the National Trade Corridors Fund, offers encouraging news for the Charlottetown Airport.
One piece of that program will see small National Airpiort System airports, like the Charlottetown Airport, be eligible to apply for funding programs down the road.
The Charlottetown Airport Authority has been limited in recent years because of its status as and NAS airport located on federal government land. That meant it was prohibited from applying to several of the infrastructure programs that currently exist.
But Charlottetown Airport Authority CEO Doug Newson says with this program they’ll be able to apply for funds going forward for some of their critical safety-related projects. That would include 2018’s planned rehabilitation of the airport’s main 7-thousand foot runway.
Newson says details on the program are still coming out, but it appears the runway project would be perfect for the program and they’ll likely be making an application.
