PEI Senator Diane Griffin is to testify before the Senate Legal Committee today as it examines her bill, An Act to recognize Charlottetown as the birthplace of Confederation.
It’s P-E-I’s newest senator’s first bill, and Griffin is using it to try to help fast-track efforts to get Charlottetown officially recognized as the birthplace of Canada.
Griffin says the bill was not her original idea, but she’s helping to expedite a process started by others.
Her bill is identical to a private members bill in the House of Commons sponsored by Malpeque M-P Wayne Easter and if Griffin can get her bill through the Senate, she says it will give Easter’s bill more priority in the House of Commons.
Griffin is to appear before the committee at 11:30 our time this morning.
